Seattle prosecutes grafitti taggers

Seattle, like other cities, is plagued with unwanted and unsightly graffiti. But in Seattle, prosecutors are going after the taggers. On Thursday, December 19, 2024, the county prosecutor charged 17 individuals with felony property destruction (read story and watch video here). Where they cut locks or breached fences, they’re also charged with burglarly.

The county prosecutor says removing graffiti from buses, bridges, and other public infrastructure costs taxpayers $6 million a year, and costs businesses and property owners millions more. Her aim isn’t to throw the taggers in jail, but rather make them pay restitution; and because much of the damage is caused by a few individuals, it’s practical to target them (see story here).
