How 12 college students just ruined their lives

They lured a gay man to a rooming house by going on Tindr and pretending to solicit sex; when he arrived they grabbed him, forced him into a chair, then punched, kicked, and spit on him. They threw him to the floor every time he tried to leave.

Twelve students are charged with “first degree assault, false imprisonment, reckless endangerment and associated hate crimes,” CNN reported on Friday, November 8, 2024 (read story here).

It will cost them dearly. Because the victim suffered not only bruises, but also a broken rib, it’s likely someone will go the prison for this. And he can sue all of them, along with their fraternity, which the school has suspended.

They’re banned from campus and suspended from classes, and if found guilty, will be expelled. If they had scholarships, they don’t anymore. If they were on athletic teams, they aren’t anymore. At least at this college, they won’t finish their educations or get their degrees. They’ll have to spend a lot of money on defense attorneys.

Having felony records means they won’t become attorneys, doctors, or corporate executives. They won’t be able to serve in the military, work for police agencies, get  government jobs, or any job requiring a background check. It also means they can’t have firearms, go hunting, or do target shooting.

They’re screwed. Why did they do it? Fraternity boys trying to show they’re tough guys? I have no idea, nor do I care. They can explain it to the judge.
