Hillary is too easy on Trump

The object of countless “Lock her up!” chants says indicting Trump is “a really hard call” (see story here).

No, it’s not, if he broke the law. She herself explained why it’s a simple, easy call: “I do think the rule of law holding people accountable is central to our nation.”

We’re supposedly an egalitarian country, where no one is better than anyone else, and the rules are the same for everyone. We’re also supposedly a rule-of-law country where no one is above the law. Letting Trump off the hook, if it’s shown he engaged in criminal conduct, is fraught with moral hazard. It also sets a very bad precedent for future presidents and ex-presidents who may be tempted to go rogue.

Hillary hedged by saying she doesn’t “know all the facts.” I have no problem with that. That’s what conducting the investigation now underway is for. Which, by the way, Trump complains shouldn’t be happening at all.

Too bad. Law enforcement doesn’t take advice from criminals or suspects in such matters.

Clinton didn’t say the Department of Justice should take into account “the potential real world consequences of indicting a former president and a potential 2024 candidate.” That’s a question she was asked. But instead saying no, she danced around the question, as public figures are often wont to do. That won’t do.

Every American who loves their country needs to say clearly and equivocally that Trump his responsible for his behavior, and if his behavior is criminal, he should face consequences. If he’s excused because he once was president, and has a large following, that makes him royalty and we’re no longer a rule-of-law country.

That’s not the country I want us to be, and you shouldn’t want that, either.
