“President Donald Trump fruitlessly pressed Georgia’s governor on Saturday to call a special legislative session aimed at overturning the presidential election results in that state.” — Associated Press, read story here
That’s wrong, and it’s good that Gov. Kemp, a Republican, is resisting Trump’s efforts to override Georgia’s voters. This isn’t a partisan issue; it’s an assault on our democracy. It’s not just that Trump would make a lousy king; if we can’t vote him out of office, we’re not a free people.
Biden won the election based on official vote counts by the states. Trump can challenge the results, but has the burden of proving they’re flawed. He hasn’t done so. His lawsuits have been dismissed for lack of evidence. That should tell you something. If he can’t prove his case in court, he doesn’t have a case.
Trump tried to cheat at every stage of this election. He even tampered with the mail service. It didn’t work because millions of Americans went to extraordinary lengths, some waiting in line for hours, to vote him out of office.
Now he’s trying to get legislatures to overrule those voters. That’s unlikely to happen. Even so, it crosses a line. What Trump is doing is un-American and unpatriotic. Republican governors, legislators, and election officials have an obligation to the American people to not cooperate with these efforts. Some, not all, are fulfilling that duty.
On Friday, conservative radio icon Rush Limbaugh complained that Trump and his supporters “look like kooks”(read that story here). He’s right about that, but he’s as kooky as they are when he suggests they only need to do a better job of presenting evidence which doesn’t exist. Biden won because 80 million Americans voted for him. Arguing their votes are illegitimate or don’t matter is profoundly disrespectful of their rights as American citizens.
For he flatters himself in his own eyes, until his iniquity be found to be hateful.
The words of his mouth are iniquity and deceit.
He leaves off the words of wisdom and to do good to one another.
