I’d like to propose that in exchange for the rest of the nation being forced to suffer through a year of Iowa’s self-important, don’t-you-dare-say-anything-against-ethanol, “I need to talk to each candidate, personally, in my kitchen” caucus system that we – coming together as a people – strip Iowa of all Congressional representation and the right of its residents to speak, write, or publish about any political issue until 2023. In this time of intense political polarization, there is at least one topic that those of us in the other 49 states can agree on: hatred of Iowa.
Or both national parties could like have rules that would reign in Iowa’s status as always first. Either by making all the caucuses and primaries on the same day. Or by rolling the date of the possible first event to a more reasonable date like sometime in May. It’s spring and the flowers are out, much better than bitter snow.
What would Washington state do with such power this year? How would it shape the table given the chance. How would Mississippi or Arkansas shape the landscape of American politics? Could a wild Hoosier squirrel really cause an American renaissance?
