Florida Governor’s Campaign Manager Appointed as President of Florida State University

Florida GOP state senator John Thrasher has been named the President of Florida State University.  He has no academic credentials.  Mr. Thatcher was the only one (of four) finalists who lacked academic  leadership experience.

After he spoke to hundreds of students and faculty,  87% of the audience gave Thrasher a ‘not good’ grade.  As unpopular as he is with the campus, he  is popular with the governor.   Thrasher is the campaign manager for Rick Scott’s re-election as Florida Governor.  Scott also appointed most of the trustees who chose Thrasher.   According to The Miami Herald, “Supporters say Thrasher, 70, is the best person to help FSU reach its $1 billion fundraising goal and its aspiration to become one of the top 25 public universities.”

Maybe universities should elevate the position of Athletic Director to a new title.  As an academic I like Satrap, but perhaps CEO would be more of our times?  That way the President of the university could run the school, while the CEO could be the fund raiser in chief?

Heck, why not? If we’re going to privatize public universities, and it appears that’s what we’re doing, then they should have CEOs and be managed for the bottom line!
