He wrote that half of the American people of his time had no direct blood connection to the founding fathers of their people. These immigrants and children of immigrants Lincoln said in 1852, “finding themselves our equals in all things … that old Declaration of Independence” provided the moral principle of equality necessary for Americans to be one people.

Lincoln’s noble words were aspirational, not descriptive. We’ve always been, and still are, two peoples: Americans and Confederates.
