A friend of mine just got his check for this years Bristol Bay season. You see they catch the fish, then off load them to a tender which takes them to a cannery and months later they get paid after the cannery decides how much fish was caught and what they can get for it on the market, good year, low prices, etc.
So this year he was paid $0.50 lb for premium Salmon, that same salmon you see in the store for $14 lb. He bought a boat and a license, hired a crew, all for a season that lasts a few weeks at best, risked life and limb, paid to store the boat all year, and he got $0.50 a pound for what the stores are selling for $14.00
