Needless to say, this “finding” is not news, only evidence in the continuing hypocrisy of colleges putting big-money sports programs above the academic mission. Just as many fraternities and sororities have file-cabinets full of old exams harvested from professors too lazy to up-grade their teaching materials, academic institutions further enable the sports enterprise by requiring instructors to fill out progress reports on some student student-athletes taking their courses. Shouldn’t all students be treated as equals? Why should student-athletes be singled out for this extra attention… except to institutionalize the corruption.
The ongoing quest of campus diversity is undermined by the over-representation of low-income, minority student-athletes recruited to engaged in the organized violence of football and basketball than to obtain a decent education. And who knows, along with these lists of “easy classes” uncovered at Stanford; with lazy cheer-leading faculty, college Athletic Department probably have several file cabinets full of old tests as well.
Not “news” ,akes it worse.
Imagine any other grou of students on camus getting similar “help?”
What is especially galling is the claim by Stanford to be Ivy League. If Stanford is really Ivy League, they ought to drop out of the Pac 10 and compete with their equals. Axs a Harvard Alumn, I know we woudbe outraged if anything like this happened there.
On the “diversity” issue .. can we call it like it is? In ACADEMIC programs, I suspect Stanford does make a real effort to recruit the best STUDENTS. That si a real challenge since kids form more affluent groups obviously have an advantage in preparation for elite schools. getting around that standard by admitting minority kids as student-athletes is as condescending as it once was to recruit Filipinos in to the Navy as orderlies, claiming we were doing “them” a favor.
This makes me VERY curious. What is the ration of AA/all students at Stanford vs the foortball team?
