On the afternoon of the final game of the regular football season, Baltazar ‘Zar’ A. Zavala ’11 opened up a text message informing him that he had received a Rhodes Scholarship! Zar was a walk on, During his first year at the university, Zavala walked on to the football team and reveled in the camaraderie, so much so that he gladly accepted giving up 30 hours a week to rigorous training routines. The true student athlete!
Zavarre does all that and majors in engineering and neurobiology maintains a 3.92 GPA and was recently elected to the academic honor society Phi Beta Kappa.
With all that, this young star is a model of America’s great tradition ….. he in an immigrant. As a four year old,. Zavala moved from Mexico to El Paso, Texas. At Oxford, Zavala plans to pursue a M.Sc. in neuroscience and clinical neurology.
Of course Zar would never have been admitted to the UW.
