Maine has the nation’s worst governor, in the person of Paul LePage, who is stupid beyond belief and has a list of outrageous statements and actions on his rap sheet. How did this caveman get elected?
Well, in 2010, he got 37.6% of the vote in a four-way race, narrowly edging out his nearest rival, which is understandable, because roughly a third of voters fall into the bottom third of the IQ curve. This number happens to coincide almost exactly with the size of the Republican base.
But in 2014, he was reelected with 48.2% of the vote in a three-way race, which is much less explainable and makes you wonder what’s wrong with nearly half the people living in Maine.
LePage is a jerk, period. You can read about his numerous controversies here, if you have the stomach. Back in February, when he was a Christie supporter, LePage “urged Republican governors to draft an open letter ‘to the people’, disavowing Mr. Trump and his politics.” But when Christie dropped out, LePage endorsed Trump within hours. (Same link.)
Today, in a radio interview, LePage called President Obama an “autocrat” (really? with a Republican Congress shooting down everything he proposes?) and said America needs someone like Trump exercising “authoritarian power.” Although he didn’t mention Putin, apparently he’s a Putin admirer like Trump is. The inconsistency between criticizing Obama for being an “autocrat” (bad) while extolling Trump’s “authoritarian” qualities (good) seems lost on him. LePage appears to be hoping for a cabinet post in a Trump administration, so apparently he wants to be one of the autocratic bureaucrats exercising authoritarian power under Premier Trump. I just thought you might like to know.
