British universities that face closure as a result of financial pressure could be taken over and run by private companies, reports The Times of London. There is now only one private university in Britain, the University of Buckingham, but companies have been gaining ground in higher education. Last year BPP, a subsidiary of the American company Apollo, which owns the University of Phoenix, became the first for-profit institution to be awarded the title of university college, roughly equivalent to an American community college. read more.
