NJ mail carrier dumped 98 ballots; no political motive found

A New Jersey mail carrier, hired in July and new to the job, has been arrested for discarding 1,875 pieces of mail over a 3-day period which included 99 ballots and 600 pieces of first-class mail. The mail ended up in two dumpsters, and was found by a local resident, who called police.

Heavy searched the carrier’s and his wife’s social media and found no political postings nor any evidence of a political motive. Postal workers dumping mail isn’t common, but it happens. See, for example, this old NBC News video of a mail carrier throwing mail into a dumpster in Florida in 2016. A typical motive is to get out of the work of delivering it.

The postal service recovered the dumped mail and will deliver it. If the mail had been thrown out, the 99 voters wouldn’t have received their ballots, and some of them might not have voted. But that’s not voting fraud; it’s a personnel problem in the postal service.
