GOP dirty trickster James O’Keefe and his “Project Veritas” minions are at it again, this time falsely accusing Rep. Ilhan Omar’s campaign of illegal “ballot harvesting.”

With the usual tactics: Doctored video clips, shell organizations, poseurs with phony credentials, and offering “witnesses” money to lie. All to fabricate a story.

In this case, $10,000 was offered to a “witness” who did the right thing: He didn’t take the money and squealed on O’Keefe and his operatives. Read story here.

People are onto O’Keefe now, and he doesn’t get away with much anymore. Why smear Omar, anyway? She’s not going to lose in November. Her district is 75% Democratic. Well, O’Keefe’s motive is obvious: To create fodder for the GOP’s national propaganda campaign that alleges Democrats cheat, lots of people vote illegally, and election results are untrustworthy. It’s all a lie, but it’s all Republicans have. They have neither candidates nor policies nor governance that voters want.

We may be on our way to single-party politics. Not because we agree on principles or policies, but because Republicans can’t get their act together.

That’s not good for the country. Politics, like business, needs healthy competition to thrive and produce its best. The GOP has ideas: Limited government, lower taxes, less regulation, fiscal responsibility. And once upon a time many people associated the GOP with good government, too. They don’t do most of these things anymore, certainly not the last one, but it’s possible to reclaim if not the high ground, at least some ground, if they try. For now, they’re not trying.

All they’re doing is wallowing in a cesspool of lies, dirty tricks, corruption, incompetence, racism and bigotry, and inchoate fascism.

Professional liars like James O’Keefe and Roger Stone have nothing constructive to offer either the Republican Party or the citizens of this nation, and if the GOP poobahs had any brains, they’d drive these characters out of their party. They’re currently stuck with a president and party leader who embraces neo-Nazis, racists, and violent vigilantes, and plots against our democracy and governing institutions, but that’s likely temporary.

The GOP appears to be heading for a major Senate housecleaning in this election, too. That will give the survivors an opportunity to rebuild the GOP into a respectable and responsible political party. America needs that as much as it needs the Democrats to score crushing victories against Trumpism and its pathetic failures.

Sometimes you have to tear down a rotting structure to its foundations and start over. That’s the condition of the Republican Party right now. For Republicans who still have moral and are capable of coherent thinking, if there are any of those left, this is one of those times.
