Four members of Britain’s richest family are headed for Swiss prisons for enslaving their servants.
Instead of paying decent wages to servants at their Swiss villa, they imported illiterate workers, held them in prisoner-like conditions, worked them long hours, and paid them less than they spent on their pet dog (read story here).
Their lawyer criticized the court’s decision, complaining, “No other family would be treated this way.” Maybe that’s because other families don’t behave that way.
Why are people who don’t need to be cheap, tightfisted to the point of criminality? It seems the richer they are, the harder they squeeze nickels pence. There’s some interesting psychology going on there.
