This movie is too delicious to pass up! In the spring of 1940, Russian engineer Michael Koshkin (a real person), lead designer of the T-34 tank, drove two prototypes from Kharkiv to Moscow, a distance of 1,200 miles. Wikipedia only says the actual trip was “grueling” (here); this English-language film fills in the gaps, albeit with a ton of fictional embellishment. The tanks arrive in Red Square in the nick of time to impress Stalin and get his go-ahead for production. The plot is interesting, the acting excellent, the photography first-rate. Running time: 1 hr., 30 mins. As a historical note, Wikipedia says, “The T-34 was the mainstay of the Soviet Red Army armored forces throughout the war;” over 84,000 were produced.
