Election denier wins rigged election

During her GOP primary campaign for Arizona governor, Trump election lie promoter Kari Lake insisted the primary was rigged.

“We’re onto some things that are very suspicious,” she said, but wouldn’t offer details or answer questions because, “I don’t want to ruin the investigation.”

Upon taking the lead, she immediately declared herself the winner (which she eventually was), but continued to insist, “I am not satisfied with how the election was run,” alluding to unspecified “major issues.”

She claims, “We’ve got to get our elections reformed” so that voters, “when they go to bed on Election Night … know the winner and they’re satisfied that it was a fair election.” (Read story here.)

Lake is a way-out-there flake (who complains being a nut has cost her friendships, see story here), but let’s skip over that and focus on what she said.

  1. When far-right Republicans like Lake talk about “election reform,” they’re using the term as a euphemism for making it hard for people to vote, especially people whose opinions or skin color they don’t like. (Read what I wrote about that here.)
  2. She have no right to insist on knowing who the winner is on Election Night; in large jurisdictions, it can take days to tally all the ballots, and those whose votes are counted later have as much right to be counted as she does.
  3. This woman wouldn’t know what a fair election looks like if one hit her over the head with a plank. (Read what I wrote about “fair elections” here.) What’s more, she doesn’t get to say what’s “fair” and what isn’t; elections are conducted according to laws, not her whims.

Yes, it’s possible a screwball suffering head explosions from earth-is-flat conspiracy theories might be Arizona’s next governor.

She’s already said she won’t certify the 2024 election for anyone but Trump, but governors aren’t all-powerful and a judge could do it for her, if she refuses to comply with the law. Given other statements she’s made, she’ll probably get sued for more than that.

But that’s not why I’m posting this. I wrote this piece because, as its title implies, this is a LAUGHING OUT LOUD story. Sometimes people who have every intention of being completely serious are just plain clownishly funny.
