Followers, not leaders

Kevin McCarthy

They talked tough after the Capitol riot. McCarthy “privately said he would tell Trump to resign,” and McConnell “said he believed Trump’s behavior warranted impeachment.” (Read story here.) But nothing came of it. That was the last thing GOP voters wanted.

So when the wind blew, they folded like a cheap tent.

You can argue their job is to represent their constituents. And it is, to a point. But what if the constituents are following a lying demagogue? At what point does someone calling himself a leader have a responsibility to lead?

Mitch McConnell

We can debate about when politicians should buck the people and do the right thing. But in this case that’s academic, because McCarthy and McConnell demonstrated they never will. Fearing their own voters, they hung back.

From now on, nobody should use the term “leaders” to describe these two. They’re nothing but followers.
