Letter to a Republican Friend

I Still Want to Talk.

Let me be clear. I have never been a member of either political party except where I was required by law to declare an allegiance and then I have registered as a Republican or as a Democrat depending on the person I was supporting.
While on most issues I lean to the left, doctrinaire attitudes on both sides have led to failures of democracy not just in Germany of the 3os, but Russia, Spain, Italy, Argentina, China, Korea etc.
As much as I have faith in our Constitution, I am frightened.  I see Trumpism as in the tradition of Huey Long, James Curley, Joe McCarthy, and Andrew Jackson. While I know that he frightens Republicans as well,  I see to many who remind me of the conservatives who, like van Papen, supported Hitler in 1932.  If he is successful, the GOP will now be more a pair to Mussolini and Le Pen then to the Bushes, Nixon, Taft or even Lincoln.
I do not see a good answer in the usual Democrat Progressive vs. Republican Conservative axis either.  Basically I think “we” need to define “we” in a way that focuses on rationality and opportunity .. why I call myself a Jeffersonian.

I understand the political process and the need for parties, but believe that rational people need to find a way to use that system to get the things we agree on done.
As one small example of my effort, I try to show balance on the web site I edit. For example, you might want to read this recent piece on public sector unions or the posts on Seattle’s homeless issue.

So, I really want to talk.
