Today is the anniversary of the birth of Andrew Jackson, the seventh president of the U.S.

Jackson is still celebrated as the founding father of the Democratic Party …. a party that led the secession of the Southern States over slavery and virtually invented the spoils system.

None of this would have surprised Jackson, after all he also  sponsored the Indian Removal Act leading to the Trail of Tears … the ethnic cleansing of the South .. leaving only slaves and their owners while 46,000 Cherokees, Choctaws, Muscogee-Creeks, Chickasaws, and Seminoles were driven off their ancestral lands.

The Democratic party still commemorates Jackson with the Jefferson–Jackson Day. This is the common name given to the annual fundraising celebration.  Jefferson-Jackson Day is usually held in February or March.

Jackson had bad qualities, to be sure, but who would you replace him with? Davy Crockett? Paul Krugman? How about me?
