SOUTH CAROLINA: People DO want to live there. Why?

TA MUG iconA Challenge.  Why do people choose to live in South Carolina?

The first three answers will receive a genuine THE-Ave.US beer mug!

Over the last several weeks THE Ave has been asking why does anyone want to live in South Carolina?  The question has focused around the overwhelming collection of statistics showing that this is amongst the most poorly educated, racist, government dependent, gun toting states in the union.  South Carolina’s status as a place to live is shared by many other states of the Unrepentant Confederate States of America.  Nonetheless, my own sister lives there. Although she will not tell me why she chose this place, I would guess that some of the reasons include the low taxes, low wages for service people, and still inexpensive housing. Of course as a retired person, she does not deal with issues like rearing her children in a racist environment or having to fear that a teenage child will get into a gun battle in this overly armed member of the Unrepentant Confederate States of America.

My sister must not be alone.   The population of South Carolina is now approaching  5 million.  The United States Census reports that almost 150,000 people moved to the state,  South Carolina has four of the nation’s 100 fastest-growing counties by percentage growth – all of them on the coast. They include Jasper, Horry, Beaufort and Berkeley counties.

Still, I am bewildered. What is the attraction? Despite its union-free environment,   the employment picture in South Carolina is not very attractive .    Inevitably, most jobs are poorly paid.    The weather,  compared to New Jersey where my sister used to live,  may be pleasant but comparing  the  cultural assets of the  New York  metropolitan environment   with her home in N. Charleston,   is like comparing social life in Saudi Arabia  to living in Paris.  If it is the weather ,  then why not move to Costa Rica, or,  if there’s a desire to stay in the United States,   there are many places in the Midwest  that are even less expensive  than South Carolina  without  the enduring   issues of living in an unrepentant Confederate state .

On the off chance that my sister will answer or anyone else would like to suggest an answer,  here is a challenge:   Why do people choose to live in South Carolina ?   The first three answers will receive a genuine THE-Ave.US beer mug!
