When an apology isn’t one

What does a liar do when he’s caught lying? If he’s famous, and has a public image to preserve, he reads a profuse apology prepared by his publicist. If he’s a good actor, his delivery drips with remorse and sincerity. He may even promise to behave better in the future.

Sean “Diddy” Combs is a music magnate and very public figure. His ex-girlfriend sued him, accusing him of physical abuse.

Until a few days ago, his attorney said he “vehemently denies these offensive and outrageous allegations” and his “decision to settle the lawsuit does not in any way undermine his flat-out denial of the claims.”

Then a video emerged of him grabbing, shoving, dragging, and kicking his ex-girlfriend. Now he’s singing this tune:

“It’s so difficult to reflect on the darkest times in your life, but sometimes you got to do that. I was f**ked up — I hit rock bottom — but I make no excuses. My behavior on that video is inexcusable. … I take full responsibility for my actions in that video. I am disgusted. I was disgusted then when I did it. I’m disgusted now. … I got into going to therapy, going to rehab. I had to ask God for his mercy and grace. I’m so sorry. But I’m committed to be a better man each and every day. I’m not asking for forgiveness. I’m truly sorry.”

Her lawyer’s response was wilting:

“Combs’ most recent statement is more about himself than the many people he has hurt. When Cassie and multiple other women came forward, he denied everything and suggested that his victims were looking for a payday. That he was only compelled to ‘apologize’ once his repeated denials were proven false shows his pathetic desperation, and no one will be swayed by his disingenuous words.”

Sappy apology not accepted.
