If you get pulled over by a dumb cop

Make some money.

Look, I’m not a fan of “auditors” (like this guy) who try to provoke a police response in order to “educate” the cops about people’s rights, or drivers who antagonize cops when they get pulled over. I fully support the police who do their jobs in a professional manner. They keep our communities safe.

But I don’t blindly trust cops, because when they stop you, they’re not being your friend. You shouldn’t waive rights by admitting anything, however trivial, or letting them search your car (which could cost you big money if they tear your car apart, because they won’t be liable for repairs if you gave them permission).

So, how should you respond when a cop asks, “Do you know why I pulled you over?” (Beginning January 1, 2024, police in California can’t ask this question, they have to tell you, see story here.)

If you’re not in California, and you get asked that question, I don’t really recommend saying “no,” because he may take that as an admission you weren’t paying attention to your driving and use that against you.

Instead, make him tell you. Ask a question back: “What did I do?”

I’d steer you away from giving the cop the silent treatment, as the driver did in the video, because that’s antagonizing. Unless the cop is really dumb, and you want to make some money. That driver got $30,000 for being arrested.

This video is full of ironies; the cop arrested her for not saying anything, then read her rights and told her, “You have a right to remain silent.” It’s amazing the light bulb didn’t switch on at that point, but it didn’t and they hauled her to the station. They were sent to training for more education in policing.
