Rep. James Comer (R-KY; photo, left), who chairs the House committee tasked with smearing President Biden, has no informants, no evidence, and no facts.
He is fishing for an FBI document called an FD-1023 that is basically an agent writing down what someone told him or her.
Comer went on Fox News and accused Biden of helping his family “profit from influence-peddling.” He alluded to bribery. But, as a Huffington Post headline puts it, he’s “not saying Joe Biden took a $5 million bribe — he’s just asking questions” (see story here).
Questions like, Have you stopped beating your wife yet?
Comer, Huffington Post alleges, has “relentlessly” promoted the bribery rumor. “It’s the latest chapter in [his] quest for dirt on the president’s family.” Wanting someone to be guilty doesn’t make them guilty, but is good enough for many Republicans, and Comer hopes a crucial number of swing voters, too. That’s probably wishful thinking.
“So far, the probe has found shell companies allegedly funneling foreign money to family members connected to Hunter Biden’s self-enrichment schemes,” but “Comer has not shown a link to the president himself.” So guilt-by-association is still all he has; here again, that works with Republicans, but not anyone else.
To build a case, Comer claims “someone very credible” alleged that Joe Biden “solicited a bribe,” but he hasn’t produced that witness, or any evidence that Joe Biden received illicit money — from sources Comer is declining to name.
His “case” is nothing more than guilt by innuendo. This is all very similar to the game the late Sen. Joe McCarthy used to play.
It works, to a degree, because some people can’t or won’t distinguish between accusation and guilt. Rep. Comer hopes they’re tuned in to circus act.
