How to start a rumor

Justice Clarence Thomas and his wife are neck deep in cash and lavish gifts.

Billionaire Harlan Crow treated the Thomases to exotic vacations, travel on jet planes and lounging on yachts, bought his mother’s home and lets her live there rent free, and paid private school tuition for a nephew he’s raising like his own son. None of this was reported in his financial disclosure forms.

Meanwhile, a conservative activist funneled at least $80,000 of cash payments to Thomas’s wife through Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway (read about that here), who was instructed to leave Ginni Thomas’s name off paperwork associated with these payments, which purportedly were for “consulting work” by her.

Matt Lewis is a conservative commentator (see his profile here). In a piece in the Daily Beast on Thursday, May 4, 2023 (read it here), he wrote that the stench surrounding the Thomases is too much for him, and has led him to conclude the Supreme Court needs a code of ethics. He used a hypothetical to explain how his lightbulb switched on:

“I imagined a theoretical scenario where left-wing billionaire George Soros was paying for Biden-appointed Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson’s child to attend an extremely expensive school, and it became clear that this situation was completely inappropriate.”

You know what’s going to happen, right? When false rumors hit the internet that Soros is paying for Jackson’s daughters’ private schooling, you’ll know how it got started.
