Insurrection senator gave free pass to crooked insurance company

Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO), who raised a clenched-fist salute in solidarity with violent rioters trying to overthrow the 2020 election (photo, left), ignored “a Christian-backed medical insurance company” that was stealing from his constituents when he was Missouri attorney general (read story here).

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Missouri’s largest-circulation newspaper, lit into him and his two Republican successors for shrugging off complaints about the company while “too busy with national ideological crusades” to protect their voters from a major fraud.

Federal regulators finally shut down Medical Cost Sharing, Inc., which “routinely refused to pay claims” and left members “holding five-figure medical bills” as the owners “pocketed millions” (read article here).

“So it took the feds to do the job that three Republican state attorneys general couldn’t be bothered with, because they were too busy feeding red meat to the base,” the Post-Dispatch said.

What the newspaper didn’t say was that Republicans don’t like federal regulation, and if it were up to them, it’s the regulatory agency and not the crooked insurance company that would be shut down.

There’s nothing new about crooks roping in marks by plastering a “Christian” label on their fraud schemes. They do it because “Christian” is associated with “good” and “honest,” and people are more likely to trust someone who calls himself a “Christian.” But anyone can call themselves anything, so that guarantees nothing. If anything, if someone is using Christianity as a marketing device, that should raise a red flag.

As for Hawley, how can you respect voters who elect someone like him?
