WTF Texas Republicans?!

Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-TX) represents southwest Texas. The Uvalde elementary school, scene of a mass shooting in May 2022, is in his district. The perpetrator bought the gun legally a day after his 18th birthday, and committed the crime a week later.

Following that school massacre, there was another outcry for stricter gun laws, and Congress passed a gun safety bill that “will toughen background checks for the youngest gun buyers, keep firearms from more domestic violence offenders and help states put in place red flag laws that make it easier for authorities to take weapons from people adjudged to be dangerous” (details here).

In the Senate, 15 GOP senators voted for it, and in the House, 14 GOP representatives did, too (details here). Rep. Gonzales was one of them. For that, and other offenses against conservative orthodoxy, the Texas Republican Party censured him in a closed-door executive session (read story here).

This is what the Republican Party is today: They censured a member of their party for voting for (1) background checks of teenage gun buyers, (2) keeping guns away from domestic abusers, and (3) “red flag” laws to take guns away from deranged people like the 18-year-old who slaughtered 17 little kids and 2 teachers in his district. This is a WTF moment, and their guns should be confiscated too, because they’re all crazy. They just proved it.

Photo: Rep. Gonzales wore a mask during the pandemic, too; that’ll get him in big trouble with his fellow Republicans
