Trump proposes “freedom cities” in the desert

Trump unveiled “utopian ideas for the future” in a campaign video released on Friday, March 4, 2023, coinciding with his speaking appearance at a Conservative Political Action Committee (CPAC) gathering.

The Hill reported (here) those ideas include building “freedom cities” on 3.2 million acres of federal land, modeled on a Saudi project. China is building similar cities, and they’re sitting empty (photo, right; story here).

Where do you get the 3.2 million acres? Well, The Hill says, “Almost all of the federal government’s 640 million acres of land is completely undeveloped.” Most of it is in the rural west. “Nevada is home to the most federal land in the country, with 63 percent of the state owned by the federal government.”

There’s just one problem: A lot of that federal real estate in Nevada isn’t just empty, waterless desert; it’s also radioactive. Hundreds of nuclear tests, both above ground and underground, were conducted there.

Repurposing federal land isn’t as simple as Trump seems to believe. You’d think an ex-real estate developer would know better.
