Don’t call yourselves a Christian college when you do this

“The King’s Singers, a Grammy Award-winning British a capella vocal ensemble, announced Monday that their planned concert at Pensacola Christian College was abruptly canceled two hours before the show due to ‘lifestyle’ concerns,” the Pensacola News Journal reported on Tuesday, February 14, 2023 (read story here).

“The college cannot knowingly give an implied or direct endorsement of anything that violates the Holy Scripture, the foundation for our sincerely held beliefs,” the college said in a statement (see story here).

This would be understandable if The King’s Singers were a drug-soaked, heavy-metal band. But they’re not. The group was formed in 1968 “by six choral scholars” at King’s College, Cambridge, and has been carried by other singers over the years (details here). There’s no problem with their repertoire or the content of their music.

The “problem” is that one of the current members is gay. A student looked up their backgrounds, then alerted college authorities (see story here).

Let’s be clear about something. The college isn’t objecting to anything the singer did or said; it’s objection is to what he is. The college isn’t trying to cancel a culture; it’s trying to cancel the existence of a whole category of human beings. Who, by the way, were made the way they are by God (or, anyway, nature).

Being gay isn’t a “lifestyle,” nor is it a choice. It’s the gender some people are born with, and can’t do anything about. (Who in their right mind would choose to be gay, given how gays are treated by bigots like those at Pensacola Christian College?)

When bigots say they can’t condone gays, that’s little different from not condoning people being black, Asian, Hispanic, or Native American. The only real difference is it’s called bigotry instead of racism.

Don’t get me wrong. The people at that college have a constitutional right to be bigots, run their private college as they please, and decide who can perform on their campus. On free speech principles, they also have a right to call themselves Christians, even though there’s nothing Christian about their attitudes, behavior, and policies.

But just because you have a right to do something, doesn’t mean you should do it. Isn’t there enough hate and discrimination in the world, without a “Christian” college adding to it? Jesus didn’t shun anybody, and anyone who has read Scripture knows He wouldn’t approve of this.

This is a college that requires its female students to “dress appropriately” before running out of a burning building (see story here). (Would you entrust your daughter to them?) So it’s not surprising these rigid, Bible-thumping dogmatics want to cancel gays out of existence.

Let’s just not make them our government, okay? I don’t want people who think like this in Congress, our state legislatures, governor’s mansions, and least of all the White House. They don’t respect separation of church and state, and that infringes on our religious freedom (see story here).

Photo: I can’t spot the gay singer, can you? That student’s “gaydar” is better than mine.
