Kari Lake was a local news anchor before she ran for Arizona governor and lost by 17,117 votes.
Lake, who based her campaign on Trump’s election lies, sued to overturn the election, lost in court, and has vowed to take her case to the U.S. Supreme Court, which shows her understanding of how laws and courts work is limited to throwing tantrums when she doesn’t get her way.
Then, at a rally in Iowa on Friday, February 10, 2023, where she teased running for U.S. Senate, she cemented her reputation as a kook by proclaiming that elections aren’t fair unless Republicans always win (see story here).
Both parties have been afflicted with fringe elements as long as I’ve been alive, which is a long time, but the Democratic Party was never taken over by goofballs.
Today’s “Republicans” can’t say the same. Having run off the real Republicans, they now nominate candidates like Lake.
Lake lost because over 30,000 real Arizona Republicans couldn’t stomach her (see story here). Normally a politician in that situation would set about mending fences. But Lake is a dilettante, not a politician who’s worked her way up to a governorship. Knowing nothing about governing or public policy, she isn’t qualified for public office. It’s about not knowing how to do the job.
Now let’s talk about her statement that elections aren’t fair unless Republicans win. In another context, this might be considered political rally speech. But Lake has called elections corrupt, refused to accept the voters’ will or court decisions, is demanding one-party rule, and it’s clear she really means it.
In that context, it’s deeply offensive. She’s saying Arizonans don’t have a right to choose their governor unless they choose her. She’s saying Democratic voters don’t have electoral rights. Our troops defend these rights, and she’s telling us she’d take them away if she could.
It’s up to voters to make sure she never gets that opportunity. This woman can’t be trusted with governing power. Her ideas are un-American and a danger to our freedom and democracy.
