How a wily politician played the state of the union

Joe Biden has more than 50 years of political experience under his belt, and it showed in his 2023 State of the Union address.

Apart from his polished oratorical skills — jabbing his finger and repeating catch phrases to drive home his messages — he told ordinary Americans what he’s doing for them.

The highlight came when he painted Republicans into a corner on Society Security and Medicare, but there was much more. The GOP was outflanked all evening. AOL News said (here),

“As he delivered his State of the Union address on Tuesday night, President Biden treaded lightly on many of the culture war issues that play out nightly on cable news: vaccination, immigration, transgender rights and how to teach about race and gender in schools. … Instead, he strategically stuck to the meat-and-potatoes issues …. Biden touted an economic plan that he argued transcended cultural and political divisions.”

In short, while Republicans are beating the drums over things history textbooks and gay marriage, Biden is talking to voters about putting food on the table. Of course, this doesn’t change the fact that inflation is a real concern to nearly everyone, or that millions of good-paying blue collar jobs have disappeared from the U.S. economy since Reagan took office, but inflation is coming down and he’s talking about bringing jobs back to American cities and towns.

Biden, a late entry in the 2020 nomination race, romped over the field to seize the Democratic nomination. He’s been consistently underestimated by his detractors and opponents. He recalls to mind the adage, “Old age and treachery overcomes youth and energy every time.” Republican hopefuls beware.
