Why doesn’t Seattle get hurricanes?

Because we have too many Democrats here, and hurricanes prefer Republicans. Hee hee, just kidding. Actually, because the Pacific Ocean is too cold, and West Coast winds blow in the wrong direction.

Hurricanes are an equatorial belt phenomenon, not least because they get their energy from warm water, which has to be at least 80 degrees. The Pacific Ocean lacks a warm Gulf Stream, and its waters are in the 50s and 60s.

Meanwhile, the equatorial winds blow from east to west, opposite the direction of the Earth’s spin. Thus, the winds that blow storms toward the East Coast carry them away from the West Coast (see diagram below).
