Michael Fanone is the D.C. police officer who was “dragged by a mob down the Capitol steps, beaten with pipes, stunned with a Taser and threatened with his own gun” (per Wikipedia, here) during the Jan. 6 insurrection. He never fully recovered and is no longer in police work.
Kyle Young (photo, right), 38, a HVAC installer from Redfield, Iowa, was one of several Capitol rioters who attacked Officer Fanone.
Young pled guilty to grabbing Fanone’s wrist, pulling him out of a line of officers defending a Capitol building entrance, and handing a stun gun to another rioter who used it to repeatedly shock Fanone in the neck (story here).
Prosecutors said Young also “threw a large speaker toward police, jabbed a pole at officers and pointed a strobe light at them” (story here). Fanone said Young also threatened to kill him and tried to grab his gun (story here).
Young was contrite at his sentencing, and his attorney asked for a 24-month sentenced. Fanone wanted 10 years; prosecutors asked for 86 months. Few rioters have gotten the time prosecutors asked for, but in this case the judge handed down 86 months.
A Trump supporter in the courtroom audience yelled out at Fanone, calling him “a piece of shit.”
