The ghosts of segregation

“In 1962, a group of conservatives, intent on retaliating against desegregation efforts during the civil rights movement, funded one-way trips to the north for Black citizens, in what they called ‘Reverse Freedom Rides.’ Hundreds of Black Americans were transported to cities such as New York, Philadelphia and Chicago, recruited by members of a segregationist group called the White Citizens’ Council, with false promises of jobs and housing. One of the targeted destination points was Hyannis Port – a village on the Cape Cod peninsula – where the largest group of riders arrived in the spring of 1962 before they were provided temporary housing at Camp Edwards near Otis Air National Guard Base.” Read story here.

Now, exactly 60 years leader, this same tactic is being used again by southern racists, who this time are using taxpayer money to fund one-way trips to the north for Brown immigrants, in what they call “Relocation,” to cities such as New York and Washington D.C., who were recruited with false promises of jobs and housing. One of the targeted destination points is Martha’s Vineyard — an island off the Cape Code peninsula — where one of the largest groups arrived in the fall of 1962 before they were provided temporary housing at Joint Base Cape Cod, which includes Camp Edwards and Otis Air National Guard Base.
