The singer just had a miscarriage (story here).
In El Salvador, that would get her 30 years in prison (see story here). (Is this why El Salvadoran women are fleeing to the U.S.?)
Under a Georgia law passed in 2019, women could be prosecuted for having a miscarriage (see story here).
In Alabama, in 2019, a black woman was indicted for manslaughter after losing her baby as a result of getting shot (see story here). Her attacker wasn’t charged with a crime.
Texas not only allows complete strangers to send investigators to the homes of women who have miscarriages, which given the financial incentives that state is dangling to abortion vigilantes, will automatically be suspected of having a disguised abortion, but Texas also forces miscarriage victims to pay for expensive formal funerals for their miscarried babies. (See story here.)
Spears is a grief-stricken would-be mother, not a killer. I doubt any prosecutor or legal vigilante (except maybe a very stupid one) will target her for legal abuse; she can afford top-notch lawyers. The burden of these toxic laws will fall mainly on poor women of color. Which probably is what they’re designed to do.
