A comet 85 miles in diameter that loops around the sun every 3 million years is the largest comet ever seen.
It was spotted in 2014 in images taken in 2010 by a Chilean observatory, was believed to be large because of its brightness, and observations by the Hubble telescope have just confirmed its size. It’s highly reflective because it consists of ice.
Its closest approach to the sun, in 2031, will still be 11 times as distant as Earth is from the sun, too far away to be seen with the naked eye.
