Guilty plea to threatening senators who certified election

A Pennsylvania lawyer arrested en route to Washington D.C. to kill Democratic senators in retaliation for certifying the 2020 election pleaded guilty to making terroristic threats.

Kenelm L. Shirk III (photo), 72, of Akron, Pennsylvania, also threatened to kill his wife.

She called police, who issued an all-points bulletin, and had an AR-15 rifle, two handguns, and “a large amount of ammunition” in his car when stopped, The Hill reported on Tuesday, March 8, 2022 (see story here).

He was picked up the day after Biden’s inauguration, and has been in jail since. He was disbarred in May 2021 after being indicted, and could get up to 10 years in prison when sentenced.

Shirk, whose grandfather and father were active in local Republican politics, is described in news accounts as a loner with a drinking problem and suffering from depression (e.g., see story here). I don’t know if psychiatrists have a formal category for Election Derangement Syndrome, but he appears to be afflicted with that, too, along with gun-itis.
