Scientists now predict sea levels on U.S. coasts will rise “10 to 12 inches” by 2050, according to a NOAA report released on Tuesday, February 15, 2022, ABC News reported (here).
That’s only 28 years away, which means a lot of people alive today will see it happen.
The report says to expect a “profound increase” in coastal flooding “even in the absence of heavy rainfall or storms,” ABC News said, along with more intense storm surges, higher tides, and more coastal erosion and wetland loss.
“Even today’s common wind events and seasonal high tides are already regularly flooding [coastal] communities, and they will do so [even more] in the next few decades, affecting homes and business, overloading stormwater and wastewater systems, infiltrating coastal groundwater aquifers with saltwater, and stressing coastal wetlands and estuarine ecosystems,” the report states.
Think taxpayer dollars to prevent or repair that damage, or even abandoned neighborhoods and communities.
There is, of course, no chance humanity will do anything meaningful to forestall sea level rise. We’re not going to give up driving cars, flying, mowing lawns, or grilling hotdogs just to save our planet or prevent the extinction of our species.
So, the only thing you can do is prepare for the inevitable. Supplies are limited, so better act now, because later may be too late to get yours.
