Liz Cheney (R-WY) was elected to Congress as a Republican. She describes herself as a staunch conservative. Nobody can really argue with that; her voting record proves it.
But the Wyoming GOP’s central committee voted 31-29 to “no longer recognize [her] as a member of the GOP” on Saturday, November 12, 2021. About a third of Wyoming’s GOP county organizations had previously done so. (Story here.)
Their beef is she isn’t Trumpy enough, and disapproves of insurrection.
But I’m pretty sure she’s still a “Republican.”
They can’t keep her from calling herself a Republican, or running as a Republican candidate. They can disinvite her from party events, and discourage their followers from voting for her, but that’s about it.
They need her more than she needs them, because she’s trying to save their party.
The Republican Party’s reputation is in the toilet; her stature continues to grow. She’s one of the very few credible leaders they have left. They’re fools to turn their backs on her. But they just did, because fools they are.
