Trump sued The New York Times and several of its reporters, along with his niece, on Tuesday, September 21, 2021.
The Times reporters won a Pulitzer Prize for their exposé of Trump’s tax avoidance schemes. (His tax returns still aren’t public, but the Manhattan district attorney has them, and Trump’s chief accountant has been indicted.)
Why is this good? Discovery, that’s why. Filing the lawsuit opens him up to wide-ranging legal discovery of his tax and business records. He can be deposed and made to answer questions under oath. His employees — including the indicted accountant — can be summoned to testify. By suing, he throws open to the defendants’ lawyers an awful lot of what he’s worked hard to hide.
Who knows? Some of the evidence that comes out might even put him in jail. But it’s enough if the public simply learns the truth about him.
