Over a dozen Capitol Police officers are under scrutiny for possibly helping rioters breach Capitol Building security last Wednesday.
“Early videos — one showing a Trump supporter taking a selfie with a police officer near an entrance to the Capitol and another appearing to show police letting protesters into the building — went viral on social media,” CNN said.
“Democratic members of the House have … raised questions about potential sympathies for the attackers among the ranks of US Capitol Police,” CNN says, adding, “House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn … said it was fishy that the rioters knew the location of lawmakers’ offices.”
Now, two Capitol Police officers have been suspended and “up to 15 more are under investigation” as federal investigators try to determine whether “law enforcement officers played a role in the riot,” CNN reported on Monday, January 11, 2021. Read story here.
Media sources also said a police officer has been arrested, but didn’t identify the law enforcement agency he works for.
Meanwhile, at least 7 cops from around the country are suspected of participating in the violent attempt to overthrow the government, including 2 from Virginia, 2 from Seattle, 1 from New York, 1 from Philadelphia, and 1 from Texas, and that number is expected to grow.
President Trump, who incited the riot, has significant support among police ranks. In addition, as I’ve previously posted (here), the FBI has found that white supremacist groups like the KKK and rightwing militias are infiltrating police agencies.
