Trump wants Barr to look harder for fraud

“President Trump on Thursday said he is ‘disappointed’ that Attorney General William Barr, in his view, has not looked hard enough at purported evidence of voter fraud brought forth by his campaign,” Yahoo News reported on December 3, 2020.

“Barr told the Associated Press earlier this week that the U.S. Justice Department has uncovered no evidence of widespread voter fraud that could change the outcome of the 2020 election. … Trump insisted that Barr ‘hasn’t looked. When he looks, he’ll see,’ … citing unspecified ‘evidence’ of alleged fraud in Georgia, which the state’s Republican election officials have vehemently denied,” Yahoo News said.

Let’s be clear about something here. When you go to court, the evidence is what it is, and you don’t tamper with or fabricate evidence to fit the legal outcome you want. That’s the stuff of disbarment and prison sentences. No ethical lawyer or honest person will have anything to do with what Trump is demanding from Barr.

This makes obvious, if it wasn’t already, Trump’s criminality. He isn’t asking Barr to investigate for election fraud. He’s asking for a different result after being told there’s no evidence of fraud. That can mean only one thing: He wants the investigators to fake the election fraud that doesn’t exist.

We already knew he’s a man with no moral compass, devoid of ethics, and there’s no line he won’t cross. He’ll drag his lawyers and staff across that line if he can — and then throw them under the bus. Those ready to sacrifice their reputations and careers for him had better realize he won’t save them if they do. With Trump, loyalty is a one-way street.

People get this. Already, lawyers and Republican office holders are walking away from his efforts to overthrow the election, which are now going far beyond denial. Two weeks ago “the official serving as President Donald Trump’s eyes and ears at the Justice Department [was] banned from the building after trying to pressure staffers to give up sensitive information about election fraud and other matters,” the Associated Press reported (read about that here). Kicked out of the DoJ building for unethical and possibly criminal behavior — do I need to explain that?

Donald J. Trump is a criminal. It’s way past time to stop making excuses for him. For judges and lawyers, governors and secretaries of state, election officials, the press, and Americans in general, Job #1 right now is preserving our democracy, the rule of law, and preventing this monster from overthrowing the government we just elected.
