Bye bye, Arecibo telescope

Engineers have assessed the Arecibo radio telescope in Puerto Rico, completed in 1963, is unrepairable, unsafe, and plans are now being made to demolish it. The structure was damaged and weakened by Hurricane Maria in 2017, and two support cables snapped in August and November 2020, and part of the structure has collapsed. Engineers concluded the remaining cables are weaker than thought, and the structure too dangerous for construction workers to try to repair. Read story here.
