When orcas play, yachts are toys

Orcas off the coasts of Spain and Portugal have been ramming sailboats, which has boaters and coast guards concerned. Specifically, they go for the boats’ rudders.

Marine scientists say they’re playing.

This behavior hasn’t been observed among orcas in waters off the western United States, nor has it been observed among most of the 60 orcas known to live in eastern Atlantic waters. It has been traced to three young males.

“They love it. And don’t know why,” one of the orca experts said. “It just seems to be something they really like and that’s it.”

Read the fascinating story here, and go sailing somewhere else.
