Alaska’s gorgeous Tongass National Forest is the world’s largest intact temperate rainforest, which made it irresistably tempting to America’s #1 environmental vandal. So on Wednesday, October 28, 2020, in the dying days of Trump’s presidency, his administration moved to open it up to road-building, logging, and development.
“Tongass is home to millions of old-growth trees,” Huffington Post said. Adam Kolton of the Alaska Wilderness League called the decision “a calamity.” He said, “Its lush islands, towering trees, glacial fjords and estuaries support some of the highest concentrations of bald eagles, brown bears and wild salmon anywhere in the world. Taking an axe to … Tongass is … reckless and irresponsible.”
The land in question originally was effectively stolen from Native American tribes by the government. Read story here and more about Tongass here.
