Eight workers have died and 350 others are infected from a Covid-19 outbreak at a 3,750-worker California poultry plant that public health officials have closed “until the plant is able to reopen safely,” after the company failed to fully implement safety recommendations made in June, NBC News reports.
However, the plant is still open for now, under a 48-hour stay of the closure order. County officials said they were trying to “limit the impact of the closure,” but haven’t reached any agreement with the company, which is ordering employees to report for work.
The plant is located in the Central Valley, where California’s meat processing industry is concentrated. Most of its workers are Latinos and Sikhs. MoreĀ information here.
