Border Patrol agents spent money Congress appropriated to buy food, medicines, and hygiene products for migrants on ATVs, dirt bikes, boats, computers, air conditioning, NBC News reported on Thursday, June 11, 2020.
“Congress provided this additional funding for the primary purpose of improving conditions for migrants at the border and ensuring migrants were receiving adequate healthcare after the deaths of multiple children in custody,” said Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS), who chairs the House homeland security committee. Thompson said Customs and Border Patrol “broke the law” by spending this money “on things that were not authorized.”
The improper spending was uncovered by a GAO review of CPB’s accounts. Read story here.
