SUNDAY REVELATIONS: of thistles and figs

The irony of today’s Sunday is the GOP and the hypocrisy of the evangelicals.  In their bible,  Jesus told the followers how to tell the godly from the ungodly. Matthew 7:15-20

“Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.”
The GOP is now a party that is gathering thistles and telling us the baskets are full of figs. \

People can pick raspberries from thornbushes. Whatcom counties number one crop in fact. And because raspberries are an invasive species sometimes the department of ecology sends out teams to eradicate them from an area good or bad fruit. Jesus was not a particularly good horticulturalist. He mixed grapes that come from the vine and thornbushes (that do bear fruit) and palm trees that bear figs.

Since the US divides church and state exactly how can folks in the GOP be prophets? Mormons and Seven Day Adventists whose members may consider themselves prophets are not necessarily members of the GOP and do not even represent the majority of evangelicals. And if Democrats want to emphasize identity politics then many evangelicals will recognize that as bad fruit and will not eat of the fruit from your basket. Dr. Martin Luther King would recognize this an would suggest the Democratic party take some alternative route.
