Will our beleaguered neighbor build a wall?
“The number of U.S. citizens seeking asylum in Canada is growing sharply,” the Huffington Post reports, adding the number of Americans seeking refuge in Canada sextupled in 2017 from the year before. This made Americans the third largest group seeking Canadian asylum seekers, after Haitians and Nigerians. Read story here.

The story does not look into one underlying issue, and glosses over it. While Canada is generous when it comes to refuges seeking refuge its immigration system is not that welcoming. US citizens seeking to immigrate seek a number of hurdles to pass over to immigrate to Canada and become a citizen. Mexico is actually more restrictive than Canada and does not wave a glad hand at refuges. Canada as does the US does reserve the right to determine if an individual is an authentic refuge. And that brings up the fact that migrating for purely economic reasons does not make one a refuge under international law. Nor does immigrating to be with ones parents if one is an adult, usually children get a free pass, and adults face hoops.
In any case 2200 Americans seeking asylum is not a large number, though probably close to the number of Americans deciding to become fully Canadian. Yes many of those stating before a recent election that they would move out of the US to Canada (why not Mexico?) have yet to do so, nor have they checked on the price of apartments in Vancouver.
Don’t take this article seriously. It’s tongue-in-cheek, only for laughs.
I understand the formal process of the law but that was based on the science we had in 73. Things have changed a lot since then. As I wrote, my guess is that science has resolved the first trimester issue. Sp I would argue that prior to the existence of the parts of a brain required for identity, identity itself does not exist so there can be no more right to life of a zygote then there is of cells kn tissue removed at surgery. No?
