Francis Jacobson on Trump and The Catholic Media

Yes, most Catholics are opposed to Mr. Trump, and the “support” the conservative Catholic media gives him is based only on the abortion issue. Here is why I say that calling them racists is counter-productive. A Trump supporter will merely take those words and twist them into some sort of “martyr complex” where their candidate is standing up against the “relativist culture of multi-cultural intolerance” or something along those lines.

I have a friend who is and has been a Trump supporter from the beginning and all I know is that the more criticism he gets the more hardened his supporters become. In addition, I used to have quite an animosity toward George Bush while a Catholic friend of mine who became one of the most well regarded members of the parish supported Bush. Whenever I debated him it ended up becoming a lecture. I was treated like and felt like a 12 year old. In addition, the Catholic media was, and is, dominated by Mother Angelica’s EWTN which almost sounds like Catholic Fox News. It’s a long story, but I found myself feeling compelled to pay attention to the conservative Catholic media which has sent the message that Catholic liberals are heretics.

Why do I care? Why don’t I stand on my own? When I’ve been told most of my life that my thinking is irrational and have been plagued with anxiety most of my life. Consequently, I’ve had to check my judgement when it comes to the Catholic faith.
